True Grit

The Pitch

-

The View
Before I give you my review I must preface warnings...  I don't usually watch westerns. When I do watch them, I unfairly weigh them to the best western I've ever seen, Tombstone. Now,knowing this I will say that I was unimpressed with this flick but I cannot dog it because the dialogue was worth the price of admission.... what else would one expect from a Coen Brothers movie though? From The Big Lebowski to The Ladykillers to O' Brother Where Art Thou to No Country for Old Men which reminds me how conflicted I was when I walked out the theater viewing that one(NCFOM)!...  Conflicted, impoverished, spent, and confused, not because I wondered about the movie but more of : did I like what I had just seen?  The answer was an emphatic yes but it took a while for me to come to that result... same here.
I guess I was expecting more action to compliment the beautiful silence in most parts of this movie. A certain measure of blood [in a payback movie] to go with the gorgeous cinematography.
One of the problem(s) this 'revenge' movie had was the audience never saw the act that the young girl was trying to avenge. All we know is that her father was betrayed.  Throughout the film it would have seemed that she'd done enough but she was incredibly insatiable. So much so that her commitment morphed into down right stubbornness.
This movie is definitely worth a gander.  All though I didn't see the John Wayne original, I heard that the book by Charles Portis was like a modern Shakespeare... a must read.
I give True Grit a B-.

The Fighter

The Pitch

The View
Mark Wahlberg's acting career was very promising pre- Max Payne and pre- The Happening debacle.  I like what I'm seeing out of him once again. You add him plus a Hall of Famer like Christian Bale and it's very hard to fail at making a pretty good movie.
By now you should know that this movie is based on a true story.  I love it when movies like that show the actual people that they where depicting either at the end or during the credits.  When they showed the actual Micky Ward and Dicky I was further astonished at how accurately the two actors displayed them.
Movies like this are most times obviously predictable but it's not about the championship fight this time... It's about family and this film did a good job of showing the ups and downs of family decisions and commitments.
The Fighter was a pretty good movie.  I would suggest that you see it after you scratch all your "have-to-sees" off the list.
Worth watching, I give it a B-

I saw this film and 3D and was blown away!!!  Never saw the first one [for some odd/dumb reason] and really had no intentions on seeing this one; I'm so glad I did.
First, the film is going to let you know that it was made without the 3D in mind yet, I couldn't imagine seeing this without the 3D! Trust me! It's worth the extra $2!!
No reason for me to go into all the reasons why people including myself devoured this film. Just know that Walt Disney is amazing, just when you thought you where desensitized to technology and eye candy, they show you that you haven't even been around the block yet.
This film gets a solid A out of me.  Even though Sam Flynn walks like a 'Jim  Carrey' superhero once the electron suit goes on... sorry folks I just had to address that, did anybody else notice that? lol

The Pitch

The View
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles 2010.  Due Date was just as charming, just as funny, and the two characters were just as intriguing as John Candy and Steve Martin.
It was fun seeing Robert Downey vulnerable and it's always a pleasure to see Zach Galifianakis in just about anything.  The laughs were there albeit mostly mild. Jamie Fox made an appearance in this movie which was another pleasantry.
I was thoroughly entertained and I would suggest this film to your queue, put it somewhere in the middle :)
Definitely worth watching.
I'll grade it about a B-

Megamind Trailer 3 (HD)

The Pitch

The View
I remember having a little debate a while ago: Dreamworks vs. Pixar. Even in this blog when I wrote about my experience viewing Toy Story 3 in which I specifically said that it's Pixar because they just know how to tug at those heart strings. I still feel that way. Megamind has all the action and comedy and twists and predictable but not-so-predictable twists that I would expect from a well made animated feature and a smidgen more. Score one for Dreamworks but they are still light on the comparison scale.
Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey all shined exceptionally!  I am becoming a bigger Tina Fey fan by each release.  Brad Pitt is becoming Hall of Fame status for his skill, and Will Ferrell continues to be Will Ferrell [that's a good thing]
This movie is definitely Worth Watching, so much so that I'll give it a B- :)

Anika Noni Rose, Anika Noni Rose, and Anika Noni Rose...smh, when will she EVER get the credit that is due her? I will admit, I hadn't totally fell in love with her works as I am now previous to the viewing of this movie. I have heard all the hoopla surrounding this film, the war of words between men and women, the Tyler Perry debate(s) but lets talk about the extraordinary performances by ALL the actors and actresses in this film.  I can not remember ever seeing a film when I thought everyone on screen deserved some sort of recognition; So, since I try to keep these reviews brief, I'll only mention the first few that made me shake my head in disbelief at how good they were:
ANIKA NONI ROSE, maybe I mentioned her before lol... Not only was her performance believable and unbelievably good at the same time, but engaging and consuming, she pulled it all off seemingly effortlessly. Of all the characters in this movie her's stayed in my heart the most.
MICHAEL EALY, not sure if he benefited from a wonderfully written script but he knocked this role out the park!
PHYLICIA  RASHAD, she always brings excellence to every role she partakes also an assortment of warmness... Now, I'm not sure if it was her or her character but Gilda [Phylica Rashad] is what EVERY community needs. If you call it being nosy, I call it getting involved. Every society, neighborhood, populace benefits from the wisdom of it's elders.
Kimberly Elise and Thandie Newton tends to continually be type casted for the exact roles that they've played in this movie. Reasoning is that they continue to knock these kinds of roles out the flipping park!  I wonder if I've seen a film without Kimberly in tears? I dunno... that's neither here nor there, moving right along. Kimberly Elise's character is the most powerful in this movie according to most of the people I talked to .  I definitely can see why but Anika Noni just grabbed me more so.   Janet Jackson really put out a wonderful performance despite what you may have heard.  I don't know why folks are always so pessimistic when it comes to high profile celebrities embarking on new or different avenues then what they are known for?  What makes it so bad is Janet was better known for her acting before she was a pop chart destroyer.

Apparently you have to go in viewing this movie knowing that it was a play in order to fully appreciate it.  I liken it to a musical without music but poetry, I call it a 'Poetical'.
Everything about this movie was mesmerizing until 15 mins left in the film... Loretta Devine's character broad stroked ALL men in a monologue she was giving on top of a roof.  Up until that point the movie earned an A+, after that I have to drop it one letter grade. Not because I'm sore at her but now that lowers the movie.  It permits narrow mindedness, shallowness... You would have to be a complete moron to think that all, or even most men will subject you to the harsh predicaments that these women faced in this movie.
So this film earns a B+ but I would most definitely get the DVD when it comes out!

This movie was pretty good.
Not a whole lot I can say more about this film, heck, you pretty much have seen this movie if you've looked at the trailer.  How much fun can you have with a run-a-way train? Whatever you come up with, take that then add Chris pines and Denzel and you get... 'Unstoppable'

The Viewing
Everything that was pitched in the trailer is a small indication of what you're going to get when viewing this movie. Man!!!...
Before getting into this beautiful symphony of sci-fi meets unsuspecting real world, I  have to ask my audience if they've seen Watch the trailer for Battle: Los Angeles (2011) ?
If not go right ahead[click the link above]. After you've finish bucking your eyes tell me, what is the technical term used for movies that beat the 'Blockbusters' to the punch with their own rendition of the same movie?  Deep Impact did it to Armageddon, Killers[which was no where NEAR as good to the blockbuster] did it to Knight and Day and now Skyline beating Battle: Los Angeles to the punch... feel free to leave a comment if you know the answer or you think you know the answer :) thanks!
There have been so many conflicting arguments about this film, namely the ending.  I respect both sides of the argument but one thing that no one can sell me or lie to me on is the intrigue; ESPECIALLY when the true plot jumps off.  No matter what you've been told NO ONE could predict what was going to happen next unless they had read/saw a spoiler.
I personally LOVE decision based movies ie: The MIST where no decision is necessarily the wrong one but still you must choose. Most times the ultimate decision that is made is based on the character's makeup morality, upbringing, training, ect.
This movie had all the things that I thought I would get out of this film plus more..The direct opposite of my District 9 experience, in fact those these two films should swap names.  District 9 belongs tagged to a masterpiece not a piece of mass...
I know, corny but there it is :)
This film gets an A.

Let Me In

The Pitch

The View
One of the better horror films that you'll ever see.  I love the pleasant surprise of greatness when your expecting mediocrity. Let Me In was everything I suspected from Interview with the Vampire but without the lengthy feel and a measure of more intensity; and dare I say darker?
I loved this film so much that I rented the original Dutch film 'Let the Right One In'.  After viewing that film it became apparent that this is one of the few cases where the remake succeeds the first film. The latter film took everything that was great about the rudimentary piece and enhanced it. Plus the two child stars in Let Me In were leaps and bounds better than the two in the first film... Chloe Moretz and Kodi Smit-McPhee.  I wouldn't be surprised if these two become type-casted for the horror genre.
Lastly, kudos to now&laters [one of my childhood treats] to close a deal for this movie. Not only was it fun to see them all over the big screen but the manner in which they were used [eerie].  Again, Kodi knocks me out whenever I think back to this film and picture him singing the now & later jingle so innocently, so softly. Which then reminds me of Vito Corleone in that quarantine room at the beginning of Godfather II .  Swinging his little legs in that big chair in that 'big' situation singing some Italian song while gazing out the window at the new land. Stuff like that is like a tattoo on the brain.  You can't erase them away and most times you wouldn't want to anyway.
 Gotta give it an A+!

The story behind the social media phenomenon facebook. Chronicling the inception of the face book and the struggle that occurs between friends when a computer programming genius seeks revenge from a broken heart. In the seek to event a popular college driven social sight were intellectual property rights broken or is everyone out to make a dollar?

The View
If you are not apart of the facebook community it would behoove you to see this film. You should be at least curious as to why your friends, family, and grandmom stay talking about this site.  You should want to know why you can't go anywhere online or look at a commercial on television or see a passing bulletin without seeing a share link to facebook. If you are on facebook and you haven't already gone to see this flick... why not?  Oh, I get it; You think that it may be a boring movie, MmmHmm I see [nodding my head]... Well your not that far from the farm, I mean, the only action sequences I can remember is some running and a guy gets his laptop smashed on the desk.  You may remember both those instances from the trailer HOWEVER, this movie was ANYTHING but boring.  There was so much information and great dialogue to digest that I left half my popcorn on the floor and I'm not known to leave an empty bag of MJR theater popcorn.  This is what I thought Wallstreet: Money Never Sleeps would have been.
They brought out explanations and the course of thinking back to the origin of The Facebook when it was exclusively for college students. They provided, for and Marketing students that may be reading this, the importance of qualifying and exclusivity. There were people involved in the development of Facebook that took me by complete surprise.  I mean even the shots at Harvard were mesmerizing.  I was able to grasp the whole college/ Harvard experience with exceptional campus cinematography and some great acting.  Those Harvard twins where funny to me, they provided our main character(s) with a formidable foe as well as being able to touch the audience with their side of the story... Very interesting stuff,  I wouldn't mind seeing this one again.  I give this movie an A.  I just can't think of any way that they can improve this movie.  My LORD was this movie Worth Watching!!!

Legend of The Guardians : The Owls of Ga Hoole

-

The Pitch
Fables of legendary guardians that will vanquish evil fills fill the heads of impressionable young birds.  While some Owls believe the tales to be purely myth one young owl, in particular, allows his faith to somehow lead him to these protectors of good.

The View
Firstly, the animation in this movie is paramount.  You will find no better use of computer animated graphics period[.]  I wish I would have saw this movie in 3D because one can only shutter to think of how more visually mesmerizing this movie could be!  Not to be a stickler but the movie seemed to be in love with itself at times with the multiple slow-motion spots. After first couple of times it started to seem coerced.
I think kids would be intrigued but bored shortly thereafter... well, I guess depending on the kid.  I would think if your children stayed interested in the Lord of The Rings where there were some spots that ran long, those same kids should be able to appreciate this.   There weren't too many dry spots, it just seemed a bit longer than it actually was.  The story-line time didn't take long at all.  Of course you already know the movie is about a plight to see if the Guardian legend is true and instead of a journey lasting a year,  they hit their answer within a day or two. I can appreciate that.
By the end of the movie I had long forgotten ANY of the Birds names [except for 'MetalBeak'] and the charm wore off as I walked out the dark theater into the brightly lit hallway.
Ill give this one a B- and it is Worth Watching only if your in the mood for a kid's flick.

'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' Trailer HD

-

The Pitch
Gordon Gekko, ex-trader for Wall Street pirate is being released.  Looks as if he's been rehabilitated and using his knowledge of the old/current financial market to peddle his books and give seminars.  Meanwhile a young, enthusiastic young Wall Street trader is not only seeking Gordon's  daughter's hand in marriage but seeking a mentor... Can Gordon be trusted?  Is he really a financial anthropologist or is this just all part of 'the game?'

The View
I understand this to be a sequel.  Although I missed the first Wall Street it didn't seem to hinder my viewer experience with this movie.  The script developed the characters quite nicely. A lot of the stock trading mumble jumbo and financial jargon missed me but I was able to comprehend most of it.  Nice job to writers for respecting a semi-intelligent audience and not assuming that we don't have a clue about this stuff and take time out the story to take us through Stock Trading 101 i.e trading Places [loved that movie though!]
Josh, Shia and, of course, Micheal Douglas shined.  The supporting cast did an excellent job as well however,
I seemed to breathe long heavy breaths while I was watching this movie.  The pace was a little slower than it needed to be and it made the movie seem long.  Ultimately, the conflict resolution was mild, to me. The conclusion of this story did not affect me at all.  I almost felt like the movie didn't entertain nor grab me... enlighten me, yes!!!  Satisfied? No.
I'm giving this film a C+ and a marginal Worth Watching.

The Pitch
A band of extremely dangerous and heavily armed bandits from Boston are robbing banks very frequently. On one particular heist they pick up a hostage that they let walk.  Somehow one of the bandits reunite with her and  falls in love with her.  How can this work?  Will she ever realize who the man she fell for really is?

The View
This movie was really good.  A friend of mine said the editing sucks [in so many words] and I agree.  Besides that I thought the movie was very compelling. The action scenes were intense and the level of intelligence on both the cops and the crooks side was scary[in a good way]. There are few things better than a 'smart' action flick with a dash of 'thrill' in the batter... very few. Climax scenes were intense to say the least while maintaining, what I like to call, the believability factor; So I gave it a B+.

The Pitch
An elevator ride that goes wrong, how wrong? People are turning up dead and the passengers seem to have no part in the killings.. or do they?

The View

Conroy-  I love a movie that gets straight to the point. Almost as if the director knows that we were already briefed by the trailer so lets get to it!  That's what this was, an inevitable elevator ride that goes horribly wrong. Your left squinting & squirming when the lights strobe.  You're tensing up while forgetting to close your mouth when the dark hits. Finally your exhausted while second guessing yourself about who you think is doing all of this.
Didn't see Avatar: the last Air bender or Lady in the Water. Fell asleep on Signs and never finished the Village.  Loved the 6th Sense and Unbreakable, however I absolutely loathed The Happening [made my list for worst movies I've ever seen] entirely! People say that M. Night Shyamalan has fallen, with his latest tale of terror-in-tight places, it would appear that he is now balancing out his legacy of Brilliant film making... Brilliant Conroy?... yessir!
Definitely Worth Watching and I give this movie an A!

The Pitch
Two platonic friends end up in a quandary when one of them decides to have a child in an unconventional way. Meanwhile the other friend makes a mistake and places his seed in the donor cup.  How could this happen?  What are the ramifications?  Will he ever tell her of the deed?  Will she find out on her own? This is perceived to be a comedy.

The View
Conroy-  Firstly, ANY film with  Justin Bateman in it is perceived to be a comedy.  This one had the look and feel of "The Break-Up" with Vince Vaughn and Jenifer Aniston.  However, this movie [The Switch] was a little bit more funny than tragic. Jeff Goldblum was good as a supporting actor.  He can seemingly have chemistry with ANY actor or actress in Hollywood.
Now the events of this movie are leaked [once again!] through the lengthy preview/trailer for the movie.  The movie was still very watchable and spawned many discussions afterwards... Is there really a such thing as a 'platonic friendship' between male and female?  Would you get artificial insemination? What would you do if you were the donor? Blah, blah and blah.. but my biggest question/gripe is how do you get THAT tore up [not a spoiler thanks to the trailer] that you can't remember ANYTHING that you did the night before?  I'm sure it's possible with alcohol and drugs but not just with alcohol.  There is yet another movie in which Bateman's character gets so wasted that he can't give anny account for the previous days activitys.  It is called "Extract" and it is WAYYYYY funnier and much more believable.
Anywho, as my younger sister would say, I enjoyed it.  The movie's inevitable moment of reckoning was quite invigorating, at least more than I thought it would be and I ultimately enjoyed it; So it receives a solid B from me and it is definitely... Worth Watching:)

The Pitch
A 'one last job' flick. Whatever his profession is he's very skilled. His past is full of terrible things and apparently not very sure that he can be redeemed. Will he be able to 'get out' of whatever it is that he is in to?

The View
Conroy-  This film was gorgeous. Cinematography was excellent!  The only problem, well one of the problems is the pace.  The American had the tempo of "Citizen Kane"... may have been a little slower than that. This movie suffered from it's opening scene as beautiful as the landscape was it was just too unsettling to say the least.  So unsettling in fact that the chain reaction of that event effected my sympathy for the main character through-out the entire film.  The opposite of the viewing experience for 'No Country for Old Men' if you will.
The times when the movie was suppose to be exhilarating ended up being a notch north of moderate... based on my prior movie going experience this movie didn't really show me anything new. I dunno, your experience may differ.  I give this movie a marginal C+ but I would probably never sit through this movie again. Worth Watching... at home. :)

The Pitch
A group of stylish bank robbers draw you into a world of crime with a heightened level of sophistication and finesse, until one of the ostracized members of the group is released from prison and comes to TAKE his portion and set the group up for a major down fall.

The View
Conroy-   One of the things I did not know going in the show is that T.I , Chris Brown and Morris Chestnut were all executive producers of this film. Not knowing that I sat in this film amazed!  Now that I know that, I sit back and reminiscence and finally marvel at what they were able to put together!  One thing that astounded me was the successful use of the 'action cam'!!! FINALLY!!!  That technique was done properly in this film.  No sense of vertigo, and I was able to follow effortlessly. I love the reference to the movie" Italian Job" to describe a potential caper. I also like the exchange between Idris's character and his sister.   I thought I knew how that relationship would effect the plot in the story but I was wrong.  That's why I love movies; great story telling!!! If I can't figure it out then the story goes from good to great in my book!!!
It was weird seeing Darth Vader [Haden Christensen] in this role because he was deceptively dorky, I guess it was his style.  He gets a bad rep for his acting but I don't feel as if his acting sucks.  I also don't feel T.I's acting was that bad either. T.I's strong southern accent and slow speech equates poor acting to most of the people that know him from rapping.  Looking at his performance objectively the intonation in his speaking, his mannerisms, and misplaced attempts at humor defined the mysterious intentions of the character he played.
This movie is Worth Watching and I give it a B!!!

'Piranha 3D' Trailer HD

The Pitch
Apparently, a rift in the earth allows a body of water underneath a lake to become open.  What's down there is something truly horrific.  Can the Sheriff and all the Sheriff's men help get thousands of kids on Spring Break out of the water and back home safely away from the danger?

The View
Conroy-  Remember when the "Horror" genre use to mostly be a thriller with added gore?  What they've done now is turned everything into a slasher style of film, who can gross you out the most...  What happened to the thrill!!??
If you like breasts and gore... you'd probably still  be disappointed with this flick.  For those of us with a little more depth... is 'loathe' too strong of a word?  The irony is the movie is about as shallow as the bimbos being bitten.  Even the main characters were a disappointment to me, too many hardheadedness and disobedient kids for me to feel ANY sympathy for ANY of them. The only thing about the movie that made me smile was a sliver of a role played by Christopher Lloyd.  Man it was good seeing him again with his usual bugged-out eyes and mad-scientist like gestures.  I was just itching for him to give us one good "GREAT SCOTT!!!"   Jerry O'Connell was a good imitation of Joe Francis [founder of 'Girls Gone Wild].  What I didn't like was the special-effects, it looked like something out of the last Final Destination 3D catastrophe. I hated most of the acting.  No one was believably scared or in pain except the love interest of the main character.  Just a bunch of screaming and shallow (there goes that word again) humor filled my eyes and ears for that whole time I was in the auditorium.
Another thing... The way some of the people die in this movie is just ignorant but the way one of the characters die is beyond moronic.
Lastly, I saw a lot of kids in the theater... what are they doing there? I dunno what the rating is but it's as close to NC-17 as anything could get. Alright, I'm done wasting pixel space on this blog to further discuss this waste of a great movie idea turned lame.
This movie was not Worth it and get's a D- from me.  You should do yourself a favor and wait for the rental in standard not 3D.

My Top 15 best movies ever made. - Conroy Jointer's MySpace Blog |

My Top 15 best movies ever made.

Because one of the prerequisites of the list is that I must have visually seen the movie in its entirety, a number of well deserving movies got left out i.e. "Lawrence of Arabia", "Vertigo", "Full Metal Jacket".

Since I LOVE all genres of film I will try to have a film from each category represented on my "Top 15" list.

Finally I would like you to keep in mind that this is my NOT my top 15 "favorite" movies, but movies that I feel will never be out done.  So they will appear in no particular order.

•    Epics/Historical:        "Ben-Hur"   Not the original but the Charlton Heston classic w/ Stephen Boyd as Messala.  What I love about this film is the direction of the events.  How each predicament happened and the reason why they happened. Friends turned to foe movies always intrigue me.  Then it is a movie about forgiveness and Love with enough action to satisfy.  The gorgeous landscapes and back drops for that film period are unmatched by any other film around that time, and the music…  The music, I feel, tops any other film ever made.  You get this 6 minute orchestral entrance before the movie starts with the back drop of Michelangelo’s Sistine chapel in the background.   This movie can be remade but this one will never be out done.  Favorites: Troy, 300, Gladiator,  V for Vendetta, The Count of Monte Cristo, The First Knight, The Passion of Christ, The Last Samurai, “The Ten Commandments”, and The 13th Warrior

•    Musicals:        "Sound of Music"  "The Wizard of Oz" deserved this spot but so did “The Blues Brothers” and “Singing in the Rain”.  These four films could easily make anyone else’s top 15 lists.  Unfortunately, it is the one top film for each genre that makes this list elite.  How does the “The  Sound of Music” trump the other 3?  For me, it’s the plight of the family fleeing World War II as Germany begins to claim Austria…  I remember the first time I heard the Captain sing “Edelweiss”.  I was too small to know what it meant, I just remember it was one of the most beautiful songs that I’ve ever heard and it was song by this highly over aggressive military disciplinarian.  By nature I HATE musicals but love music and movies...  Go figure!  These four movies embodied everything I loved about music and movies.  Favorites: “Blues Brothers”, “Purple Rain”, and “Black Snake Moan”

•    Drama:        "Casablanca” I can see "Citizen Cane" being argued over 'Casablanca” but to no avail. Casablanca is by far the best drama ever.  I took me awhile to appreciate it but I am here.  This is truly one of the rare films that actually looks better in black and white. Definitely has the whole film noir look and the whole love nostalgia thing going.  Certainly one of those films that I love more as I continue to rewatch it.  Favorites: “ Shawshank Redemption”, “Slumdog millionaire”,  the whole “Silence of the Lambs” anthology (except ‘Red Dragon’), “A Bronx Tale”, “Deep Impact”, “Love Jones”,” Misery”, “Do the Right Thing”, “The Man in the Iron Mask”, “The Barefoot Contessa”,“Titanic”, “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “SugarHill”

•    Crime/Gangster:        "The Godfather I, II, and yes even III” The third installment was misunderstood by soooooo many people.  To me, the way the director chose to end the ‘Godfather’ franchise was authentic and very true to life.  This film changed the ways we watched movies and also changed the ways films were made ethically.  Alfred Hitchcock's ‘Psycho’ (1960) help shred the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 (Hays Code) and replaced it with MPAA ratings, so that movie producers can continue to push the envelope.   In 1972 this movie stayed the course of film novelty then blew the doors off theater and stayed on your mind decades after.  Gorgeous film!  Real quick; the most daunting part was @ the beginning of Godfather II, when little Vito Corleone was being quarantined.  They stuck him in that little room (cell) and he sat staring out the window looking at the Statue of Liberty singing a song in Italian while swing his legs back and forth…  That scene I will never forget.   Favorites: “Scarface”,  “Casino”,  “Pulp Fiction”,  “A Bronx Tale”, “ New Jack City”, ”Fresh”,  “Menace to Society”, “Boys n da Hood”, and “Belly”.

•    Science Fiction:       "Star Wars" To me, this was THE best movie ever made. For any reason you would want to go the theater this movie had what you was looking for and more.  If you are not a Sci-fi person and can do without all the weird looking creatures and things I can understand that.  You have to appreciate the vision of unknown worlds and the creatures that may inhabit them according to the George Lucus’s mind.  I love the Muppetering of the monsters instead of animation mixed with motion picture images.  I wish they would bring Muppets back today instead of using this CGI all the blasted time.  “I am Legend” would have benefited from puppets tremendously!!!  (Why didn’t they just use live Lions for those two scenes?  Anyway…)    The struggle between good and evil has never been detailed so precisely.   I love how the film shows evil as simply a different point of view.  The last Star wars made, “Revenge of the Sith”, actually being the 3rd chapter of the franchise, exemplified evil perfectly.  Both sides [Good and Evil] had to resort to deception.  The good used it to expose the truth but Anakin didn’t know that.  He was confused.  I can honestly see how that can happen and it’s important to the story’s development and how it finally ends in “Return of the Jedi”.   One of the best lines I ever heard in any movie--- “Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”- yoda    Favorites: “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, “A.I”, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, “Aliens”, “Robocop”, “War of the Worlds (2005)”, “D.A.R.Y.L”, “The Transformers”, “Independence Day”, “Back to the Future”, ”E.T”,  and “The Matrix”.
  •   Action:       "Terminator", “The Dark Knight”, “The Raid 2: Berandal” * list modified April 14, 2009 **modified again on 11/11/15 [TR2Berandal starts approximately 2 hours after the The RAID: REDEMPTION ends, so you have to watch both to fully appreciate TR2B…  http://worthwatchingblog.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-raid-2-berandal.html ]   It pains me so very much to omit the original "Predator" directed by John McTiernan with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Bill Duke, and Jesse Ventura from the top, then turn around and demote Terminator as THEE  best action flick ever but this last installment of the Batman legacy has been argued to be the best flick ever… and I like that argument.  Predator may be more a nostalgic nomination but the more I see it the more ageless it becomes; truly a masterpiece. Both “The Terminator 1 & 2” (especially 2) is as good as it gets when it comes to action films.  One type of film that I can’t stand is one with a whole lot of meaningless action and no realistic plot.  Everyone that knows me knows that my favorite type of film is an apocalyptic film. ** The Apocalypse happens to be the backdrop for a gorgeous and very smart action riddled film.  Terminator 1 is such a classic and you are instantly involved with the movie as the film begins its character development stage.  The characters in film that you care about what happens to them, you hope for them, and you never forget them. By the way, Bad Boys II is the most slept-on action flick of all-time.  The only ones that would argue are the ones that have not viewed it yet. Favorites:  Predator, Terminator, All the “007’s”, “The “Bourne” franchise, “Bad Boys II”, “The Professional”, “True Lies” “Rambo (2008)”, “Kill Bill”, “Metro”, “Speed”, “Superman II”, “Con-Air”, “Mortal Kombat”, “Armageddon”, “Rush Hour”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Four Brothers”, all the “Mission Impossible” movies, “Smoking Aces”, “Spiderman II”, “Batman”, “Waist Deep”, “The Fast and the Furious” and “Death Proof”
See: The Dark Knight just murdered everything that you’ve seen thus far...       for my initial review of The Dark Knight.

•    Horror:       "Dawn of the Dead (2004 version)”   This is the only film on my list that may get outdone sooner or later.  Until it does, “Dawn of the Dead” is paramount in the Horror genre!  I had a struggle with this one because “The Shining” could have taken tops; it is a great horror film.  Again, what does Conroy like?  Apocalyptic films!!!  This one inserts you into the cockpit seat from the start!  Then it’s all about confusion and survival.  Never been a Horror/Scary movie type of person but I will watch it if it’s good…  This film is great and I feel Ving Rhames puts forward his best performance.  Favorites: “The Shining”,  the whole “SAW” franchise, all the “Final destinations”, the  original “Dracula”, the first “ Blade”, “Spawn”, “The Ring”, “The Sixth Sense”,  “Carrie”, “Face Off”, “The Blair Witch Project”, “From Dusk to Dawn”, “Vanhelsing”, “Interview with the Vampire” and “Cloverfield”

•    Comedy:        "O Brother Where Art Thou?"  Out of all the genres ‘comedies’ by far was the most difficult.  How do you gauge the best comedies?  You can’t go off which movie made you laugh the longest because those are rarely good movies.  For instance, I never laughed as often and as hard as I did in “Friday”.  I also recognize that this wasn’t the most carefully crafted film but it definitely did its job.  OBWAT (O Brother Where Art Thou) succeeds in every way a motion picture can, especially in laughs.  Very rare will you find such a talented cast, loads of great cinematography, and a great script work in a comedy but it does here.  This film came out before “Oceans 13” so the world hadn’t yet witnessed a vulnerable George Clooney character.  I must admit, that was a good chunk of what was so hilarious about the film! ( Always worried about his hair)  And the verbiage of all the characters was extremely funny.  Favorites:  “Liar Liar”, “9 to 5”, “Ghostbusters”, “Raw” and definitely "Coming to America"!!!, “48 hours”, “Trading places”, “All about the Benjamins”, “Kings of Comedy”, all of the “Fridays”, “Money Talks”, “Talladega Nights”,” Happy Gilmore”,  “ The Ladies Man”, “40 year old Virgin”, “ The Big Lebowski”, “My Cousin Vinny”, “ The Three Amigos”, “Vampire in Brooklyn”, “Norbit”, “The Ladykillers”, “The Pineapple Express” and “Kingpin”

•    Adventure:        Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"    “Lord of the Rings” should have this spot but “Indy” is so iconic, so raw, and filled with so much energy and great music that I have to give Indy this spot.  Indian Jones has also created a perfect adventure film blueprint/format that every adventure film made from now on will be measured to.  Both movies [Indy & Lord of the Rings] have great scripts that allow the actors and actress to shine despite all the action going on around them.  However, at times L.O.T.R (Lord of the Rings) slows down whereas Indiana doesn’t.  The Indy team does their own stunts where LOTR uses a good measure of great, no, superior CGI.  Harrison Ford to play Indiana Jones has to be argued one of the best casting jobs ever!!!  His character maintains class as a college professor and researcher, while being able to convert to the rugged look at moment’s notice.  He’s able to be convincingly serious while being funny.  Remarkable.  One of my favorite films ever.  Favorites:  The trinity of “Lord of the Rings”, “Pan’s Labyrinth”, “The Mummy”, “The Game”, “King Kong (2005)”,“Cast Away”, “Legends of the Fall”, “Clash of the Titans” and “Forest Gump.

•    War:        "Saving Private Ryan"    "Letters to Iwo Jima" would have easily replaced Saving Private Ryan and almost did.  What saved "Saving..." is the first 15 to 20 minutes of the film.  These moments were hailed as the “most authentic” portrayal of war by World War II veterans.  I mean as soon as the movie projector emits light on the screen you are engaged.  Then you have sit through the  heart wrenching drama of other soldiers protecting this one soldier while still wanting to fight.  It’s a tale of extreme lost, brotherhood, and sacrifice.  Love this picture.
I have to say this: “Crimson Tide” is the most underappreciated, and one of the most important films ever and it was mostly all shot in a submarine!  Yet the setting never gets repetitive or monotonous.  The decisions that crew had to make were unbelievable and the ending…  That ending defined the meaning of the word tense.  Lastly, the scariest part is that the ending could happen in real life.  Nuclear holocaust is  real and again, what does Conroy love?  You should know by now     Favorites: “A Soldier’s Story”, “The Siege”, “Firefox”, “TopGun”, “Pearl Harbor”, “Enemy at the Gates”, “The Last Castle”, “Dead Presidents”(Another very underrated, very important film), “Behind Enemy Lines”, "Letters to Iwo Jima", “Glory”, “Cold Mountain”, and “Three Kings”

•    Western:       "Tombstone" I’m not your typical Western lover that would be my Dad.  However, I have watched Tombstone so many times that  I could probably recite every line that Doc holiday so meticulously articulated in his immaculate southern accent in this grand of a Western.  I wasn’t around in that era but the screenshots and settings of Tombstone just look so authentic.  The movie was easy to watch, and even easier to love.  I really like Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday!  “Unforgiven” with the legend Clint Eastwood and “3:10 to Yuma” with two more legends in there own right, Russell Crowe, and Christian Bale could have been number 1.  Tombstone has everything those movies have plus Val Kilmer as Doc!  Favorites: “3:10 to  Yuma”, “Unforgiven”, ”Young Guns”,  and “Posse”

•    Animated Films:        Jurassic Park” I still remember the day my good friend LaMorris Bell came into class raving about this movie. Until opening night, the only visual of the movie that was released was the movie poster .  So it looked like a kid movie because it was well marketed as a family film.  Well, I’m a junior in High School and my boy comes in class early just crazed over this movie and won’t stop talking about it for the rest of the day.  “If you only seen what I saw.” he kept saying.  When I finally went and saw this masterpiece my mouth was open the whole time.  Talk about your jaw dropping literally, I couldn’t believe how real everything looked.  It was a superb adventure, it had a good number of surprises and it was a very smart film.  The reason I put Jurassic Park under animated films is because of all the CGI that they used.  Let me note that they did the CGI just right and incorporated robotic puppets and such so that the illusions of the dinosaurs were seamless.  Plus no way could I put JP in the adventure category and not give that crown to Indiana Jones.  Favorites: “Akira”, “The Lion King”, “Beauty and the Beast”, both “Final Fantasy(s)”,”Animatrix”,”Cars”, ”Monsters Inc”, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, “The Mask”,” Finding Nemo”, “Shrek”, “Toy Story”,” The Fox and the Hound”, ” Ratatouille” and “The Incredibles” speaking of The Incredibles…

•    Children/Kid/Family Films:        The Incredibles” This by far is the best kid’s movie ever; in fact I don’t really consider it a kid film.  Family film yes but kids?  Kids can enjoy it but adults really appreciate the adult situations.  This movie had the most fun out of all the films that I have mentioned so far.  Favorites: “The Grinch that stole Christmas”, “101 Dalmatians”, “Akeelah and the Bee”, “Chronicles of Narnia”, “Angels in the Outfield”, and “Bridge to Terabithia”

•    Sports Films:        Rocky” No contest here.  I think I was around 4yrs old when I saw “Rocky II”.  I remember me and my little sister up in the isles punching at the screen along with Rocky.  I was ridiculously shy back then so this was way out the normal for me and especially my baby sister.  Rocky is a great film and so is the rest of the sequels.  What more can you say?  You don’t even measure this by “Sports movies” standards, you gauge this among the best films ever made.  Favorites: “The Cinderella Man”, “The Gridiron Gang”, “Million Dollar Baby”, “Any Given Sunday”, “Friday Night Lights”, “Undisputed”, “Raging Bull”,  “Rudy”,  “Above the Rim”, and “Ali”

•    Documentary [style] Films:        Malcom X” This was Denzel’s greatest performance other than his role in “Glory” and “A Soldiers Story”.  Spike Lee really out did himself with this one.  I really wanted to put “When we were Kings” on the marquee because the producers of that film did a heck of a job exploring every aspect of the Ali-Foreman fight and the events leading up to and after that historic event.  I just feel like no other documentary style film will be able to out perform “Malcolm X”. Favorites: “The Hurricane”, “When we were Kings”, “City of God”, “The Lord of War”, “Tupac:Resurrection”, “Ray”, “Sicko”, “Fahrenheit 9/11”, "42", and “Blow”

** Biggest disappointment in apocalyptic film history was “End of Days” with Arnold Schwarzenegger

'Lottery Ticket' Trailer HD

-

The Pitch
One of three best friends from the neighborhood win the lotto and all heck breaks loose. What happens when you take a chance on the lotto and win? Mix in a whole cast of the most extreme urban charcters and a dose of wisdom from an aged Ice Cube and your answer is a lot of laughs.

The View
Conroy- What we got was a few laughs and an 'ehhh' experience once it was all said and done. Don't get me wrong, the movie was funny and had it's moments but those moments were far and too few in between.

Let me take a minute to talk about a dangerous trend with these trailers. The movie industry is showing way too much of the films in these previews & trailers! This movie greatly suffered from that, and lacked the charisma to make up for it. Instead it was a calculated map drawn up by the trailer for us to take a paved road straight to the credits. I hate that. Why not use deleted scenes from the floor of the edit room to decorate these trailers huh?!? EVERY director loathes going into the edit room and chopping up their masterpiece. This would be an excellent way to keep the work published and viewable before the 'bonus feature' add on the DVD/bluray 4 months down the road [only a handful of us that goes through that bonus stuff... another kudos to you if you are one of those people]. The "Predators" trailer is an excellent example of this. Misdirection is a beautiful tactic when trying to entertain... use it!
Brandon T. Jackson was a high point to me as 'Smokey' jr.[Friday], and so was dude from The Wire. Also, Cube's monologues in mostly all of his productions are of good value. I give this movie a C+ ... Worth Watching.

The Expendables

-

The Pitch

Looks like the boys are back in town and not just for another 48 hrs...  They look like they are serious about staying.  Every relevant muscle-armed action star from the last 3 decades made this film minus Patrick Swayze,  and Jean-Claude Van Damme.  Looks like a contest of who has the highest level of testosterone in this ‘shoot-em-up’.  They are a bunch of bad-to -the -bone mercenaries that seemingly don’t know how to fail.

The View
This movie was Awesome!!! I don't know how Stallone does it, but his movies are brilliant when the topic swirls around revenge [something that I thought Mel Gibson would be the king at until "Edge of Darkness"].  His movies also don't have the most believable action scenes i.e think Mr.T's head jerking back as Sly's glove stops a foot from is face; or any flick where he's the ONLY person that knows how to aim... but for some reason they work.  Recently, they've more than worked... his action sequences and adrenaline drunk climatic scenes have been consistent with amazing and unparalleled with ANYthing that I've seen from anyone else as of late... Again I say WOW!
Also, what a great actor in Mickey Rourke, how can he be on screen in the amount of time that he had and add SO much depth!!!!  His monologue was incredible to say the least and it also added something that I could relate to in order to fully understand the decisions that were made.  Definitely going back to see this one before it leaves the theater, you can bet that!! Worth Watching again, then again; I give this one the strongest B++  or A- (pick) that I could give.  Simply loved this movie though it's not a film (if that makes sense to you, kudos).

Watch the Official THE OTHER GUYS Trailer in HD

-

The Pitch

The pitch for this movie comes across as a satire for "cop films" done Will Ferrell's way. Two partners opposite in breed take on New York’s bad guys 'Odd Couple' style.

The View

Conroy-  First off, If you are not a fan of Ferrell's comedy, you will NOT enjoy this flick. The movie was not intended to be 'serious' even though there are moments when it looks like action sequences could have been copied and pasted from another sequel of Lethal Weapon. I laughed; Bottom line. I enjoy W. Ferrell's comedy and he didn't disappoint with THE OTHER GUYS! Based off this perception I give this movie a B! Worth Watching and worth laughing! Was it funnier than Talledega Nights? Nope; Even though it comes in at a close second... If you’re not first, you’re last.

Salt - trailer (2010) HD HQ

-

The Pitch
The detainment of an unusual Russian within a CIA interrogation room warns of a highly trained (KA-12)Russian Spy with the intent to kill the American President.  He then points at Angelina Jolie. Now she must convince her peers that she is not who the mysterious Russian says she is.  City wide woman hunt, car chases and standoffs headed by America's most elite, can she survive? Can she prove her innocence? Is she a spy? Who is... SALT?

The View
Conroy-  I had no intentions of watching this movie, ESPECIALLY after her role in the horrid mothion picture'WANTED'. My expectations for this movie mirrored that of 'WANTED' but I was surprisingly wrong. I really liked this movie.  If you are a person that has to forensically micro-analyze the believeability of every shot, jump, move, or situation in an action flick you might grimace at some of this movies intense moments.  If your ready for a thrilling, (summer)smart, movie that you can really get into, this is it.
Definitely Worth Watching, I give it a strong B+.
